Essential Mac Software & Services

Must haves and things to check out. Good list here

In this post: My picks; Yet to Check out.

My picks

TNEF’s Enough - handle winmail.dat files
TweetDeck - Twitter client, allows grouping of feeds, built in URL shortening.
Glims - Safari plug-in. Improved tab management, multiple search engines, etc. Seems reasonably stable & keeping up with Safari releases. (I finally retired the venerable-if-whacky AcidSearch 0.7b4.)
DropBox - way better than iDisk for cloud storage & syncing of files; up to 2GB for free
FoldersSynchronizer - backup software.
MainMenu - quick access to maintenance functions
TinkerTool & TinkerTool System - system maintenance & tweaking.
Bonjour Browser

PostBox - email client based on Mozilla engine. Almost brilliant.
Lingon - startup items manager & other good stuff
Grand Perspective - disk space viewer
iStat menus - read-outs in menu bar
Expandrive - transparent full FTP/SFTP support from Finder via MacFuse (somewhat flaky - MacFuse.app handles much of this).
AppZapper - GUI point & shoot clean up apps & related files
ShareTool - remote secure sharing of Bonjour services (”Back to My Mac on steroids”)

QuickLook Droplet - drag & drop any file to trigger Quicklook; can also be used as an app to preview files. Check out this site for Quicklook plugins.

Yet to Check out

NuevaSync - Wireless sync with Google Calendar & Contacts, Plaxo
Jungle Disk - backup
